Basket Cases short - Doing Your Taxes (according to two 5-year-olds)

INT. - A Sesame Street-style simple set: platform and single colour background - DAY

Racks' little sister, Pawchee and her best friend, Marshé Girafe, have put some things down on the platform and now face the camera to talk about them.

PAWCHEE

"You have to get a manila envolpe -which isn't a vanilla one- it doesn't taste like that. You have to get the licky-sticky." (her other name for manila envelope)

MARSHÉ

"And then you need to write "T4" on it!"

PAWCHEE

"And it can't be with crayon! You need a pen! And it can't be a colour. This is a good time for that special pen. So you print it nice and clear. T...4."

MARSHÉ

"Does it matter what 4 it is? Can it be this four. . ."

She makes an open four.

MARSHÉ (CONT'D)

"Or does it have to be the triangle four?"

Pawchee puts her paw to her chin in thought, unsure. She consults with the person behind the camera, then comes back to relay the information.

PAWCHEE "It's the triangle four, and no spaces."

She turns from Marshé back to the audience (smiles).

PAWCHEE (CONT'D) "So you do that."

Marshé then picks up a drawing and begins places it in the manila envelope as she explains.

MARSHÉ

"And then you put in the picture of your house that you're doing taxes on!"

They're five, they call every home a house.

Marshé pauses, considering the picture.

MARSHÉ

"Can I use colours for my house drawing?"

PAWCHEE

"Ummmm....it has to be a photocopy. So yes! Because then after you photocopy, it's all one colour and it can't be erased."

She nods.

PAWCHEE (CONT'D)

"So yes, but it has--but the paper can't be a colour. It has to be white."

Another nod.

MARSHÉ

"O-K. So where do we get the copier?"

PAWCHEE

"You can copy at the library for 60 cents a page."

Marshé shrugs.

MARSHÉ

"But nobody has any cents anymore!"

PAWCHEE

"You need the rolly coins to pay for the house to put in the licky-sticky. This is why grown-ups have stress doing their taxes-" MARSHÉ

"-because nobody has the rolly coins anymore!"

PAWCHEE

"Also, I don't know where you get a manila envelope."

She holds her paws out, at a loss.

The person behind the camera informs them that you can at the post office, or an office supplies store.

PAWCHEE

"See, she knows this because she's gone mailing at the post office,

and gotten the office stuffs."

She crooks her arms in another shrug.

PAWCHEE (CONT'D)

"So who even knows where to go if you haven't got- if you haven't done those things?"

MARSHÉ

"And that's why taxes are such stresses, because nobody has the rolly coins and they haven't gotten the office stuffs, because it's all on the Email now."

She points at the computer.

Pawchee once again smiles at the audience.

PAWCHEE

"So we hope that helps!"

They both wave, with their office stuffs and rolly coins.
